American billionaire Elon Musk resigned as director of the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) hours after criticizing President Trump's Big Beautiful Unified Act. The White House confirmed the news to Fox News and said Musk would begin the process of resigning from his position at DOGE as early as tonight.
"As my term as a special government employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce waste in government spending," Musk wrote on his X platform.
He added that the Office of Government Efficiency's mission "will become more established over time and become a consistent approach across the country."
According to the Associated Press, Musk criticized President Trump's Big Beautiful Unified Act early Wednesday, calling it "disappointing" and a "serious rift" in the partnership between the two men that was expected to transform American politics and the federal government.
In an interview with CBS, Musk called the bill a "huge spending bill" that would increase the federal budget deficit and "cripple" the Trump administration's program known as DOGE.
Musk, who gave Trump at least $250 million during the presidential election and served as a senior adviser to the Trump administration, added, "I know this bill can be big or it can be great, but I don't think you can have both."
Speaking in the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump defended his policies, touching on the delicate politics of negotiating the bill. "There are aspects of it I'm not happy with, but there are aspects I'm happy with," he said.
He also raised the possibility of further changes, saying, "We'll see what happens. We've got a long way to go."
